Corporate polish, small-company heart

In our corporate careers, we loved the energy and creativity of smaller firms, but struggled with their lack of polish. When we started Matchstick, we kept the big-company polish and discarded big-company behaviors that frustrated us.

Since 2009, we have been building a special kind of company. A place where diverse people can make a home and create their best work. A studio for craftspeople who understand pharmaceuticals and medical devices. A high touch team that builds relationships and delivers a deeply personal experience.

We’ve had many opportunities to grow, scale, or take outside investors. We’ve turned them down, valuing our independence and our ability to be a different kind of firm for the right kind of client.

As you might expect, we're picky about the projects and clients we take on. Why?

Patients are waiting. Our time is best spent helping them, not convincing skeptics, reverting to the mean, chasing a quick profit, or compromising our soul. Experience has shown how powerful our approach is, and the impact we can have when it’s a good fit.

We're problem driven, not sales driven.

No one (including us) likes to be “sold” to. We’d rather get excited about how to crack your interesting problem. We’re particularly fond of difficult, non-obvious ones.

Experience shows a rigorous scientific approach and deep subject matter expertise is superior to jargon or a generalized process. Our approach builds collaboration, not dependency.

We’re equally comfortable in the strategy as in the detail. Our skill is in listening, understanding the constraints, and framing problems in new ways. When all the obvious solutions have been tried, it’s the only way to get a different result. It’s not a fit for everyone.

We're not lowest cost...

We do not generally participate in RFP processes, as we’re not a “vendor” that does low-bid work. It’s simply incompatible with the incredible service, personal attention, and craftsmanship we provide. Moreover, it does not capture the opportunity cost of rework or churn avoided by our expertise.

...but are highest value.

We’ve built a strong reputation for repeat engagements, referrals to others, intellectual property, cracking hard problems, and delivering high-impact solutions. As a result, clients tell us a dollar is better spent with us than any alternative.
